Today was our last practice with Mr Tan. I don't know if Mr Tan will read this, but on behalf of IJ band, thank you.
'start from scratch and keep scratching'
'the band is as strong as it's weakest player'
'music is between the notes'
'is it air-con hot in here?'
'are you a rush-ian?'
Thank you for these years of teachings.
Thank you for your patience.
Thank you for being our teacher.
Thank you for being part of our IJ family.
The list could go on. I'm sure everyone would have something to thank him about. We'll miss you Mr Tan. We all here in IJ, wish you all the best and hope you excel in your studies (:
Even though it's a farewell, it's not the end. It's a beginning of a new chapter. We would like to welcome our new conductor, Mr Clarence Tan, to join our IJ family too. I'm sure we'll have a great time ahead too. And a fruitful year ahead.
Band, actually, you guys know what to do. I mean for your scores. You know what to do. Sir has told you before. Mr Clarence Tan has said before. Catherine has said before. Dawn has said before. I have said before. I mean you basically know e theory. Like when they say play your staccatos short, or accent your notes, you know it, but you don't do it at times. You don't put your theory into practical. Just do it. If you do, then you can be proud to say you're an IJ band member. For those who are doing it, continue on. If your neighbour ain't doing it, give her a poke and demand she do it. Doesn't matter if she's a senior, a committee member, or even me. Help out one another. We need the effort of everyone. If one person does it, it's useless. If EVERYONE does it, then it matters. Sometimes when i play, i find that no matter how hard i try, maybe i do e dynamic contrasts, but no one else does it, and i think, why do i even bother. I think perhaps some of you feel that way. So i just want to appeal to everyone to just take e small step to bring our music to the next highest level.
Just take a simple step. Do what your score says. Forte on your score means a Forte. A decrescendo on your score? simple, just do it. Cantabile on your score? put your feelings into it.
At least try. And i believe in you all. The committee and the teachers believe in your potential. You just need to take e extra step to bring it out.
So keep working hard towards the SYF. Let's thank Mr Leonard Tan for his years of teachings, our dedicated teachers-in-charge and our future conductor Mr Clarence Tan.
Let's work hard together.
We can do it (:
